March Events

It's springtime again in Virginia, so get outdoors, taste some wine, and celebrate St. Patrick's Day, Women's History Month and the blooming of special reenactments, arts and crafts shows, bluegrass festivals, and sporting events at the mountains, at the meadowlands and at the beach!
Northern Virginia is "Horse Country" and the site for steeplechase races starting this month and lasting throughout the year.
Chantilly - March 10-13 - The National Capital Boat Show presents this 10th annual event at the Dulles Expo Center. See all types of boats from bass boats to yachts, water sports and safety equipment.
Alexandria - March 12 & 19 - The Women's History Month Lecture is "The Women Who Saved Mt. Vernon" and "The Cooper Shop Refreshment Saloon" about the work of women who served meals and gave medical care during the Civil War. Both lecutures are presented at Fort Ward.
Alexandria - March 12 - Celebrate Thomas Jefferson' second inauguration just like he did at the Gadsby's Tavern's 1805 Inaugural Banquet of Thomas Jefferson. Meet the key players who interact with the diners.
Chantilly - March 18-20 - The Craftsmen's Classic Arts & Crafts Festival features more than 400 artists' works from the traditional to contemporary at Dulles Expo Center.
Fredericksburg - March 19 - March Muster is a re-creation of a colonial faire, including a fine array of musicians, dancers, storytellers and authentic foods at Market Square.
Leesburg - March 19 - Hometown Arts and Craft Show features works from 60 local and regional crafters.
Warrenton - March 19 - The Warrenton Hunt Point-To-Point is four steeplechase events, three timber races and two flat races at the Airlie Course.
Upperville - March 26 - The Piedmont Fox Hounds Point-To-Point features steeplechase over hurdles, wood fences, walls and flat lands.
Alexandria - March 31 - Sign up for 18th-Century Dance Classes at Gadsby's Tavern. Learn to dance like George and Martha did!

Fredericksburg - March 19 - All Children will leave with eggs filled with candy and prizes from the Easter Egg Hunt at Memorial Park.
Alexandria - March 26 - Hunt for History at Gadsby's Tavern and City Hotel. Help find the tavern keeper's Easter eggs and learn about the past at the same time. Refreshments are included!
Flint Hill - March 26-27 - Farfelu Vineyards presents an Easter Bonnet Eggstravaganza with an Easter egg hunt in the meadow as well as prizes and discounts for those wearing their Easter bonnets. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are invited, too.
Alexandria - March 27 - Lee-Fendall House Museum and Garden is the site for a Family Easter Egg Hunt!
Wintergreen - March 25-27 - Enjoy Easter at Wintergreen! Activities include an egg hunt with the Easter Bunny himself, an egg docorating workshop, kids' crafts, an Easter Sunday Brunch, Easter boonnet parade and worship service among other surprises!
Ladysmith - March 26 - The Easter Bunny will be hiding some eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt at the Virginia Bazaar. Children 12 years of age and younger are invited to help find the treasures. Free pictures with the Easter Bunny, too!
Spring Events
Williamsburg - March 9-12 - The popular Williamsburg Film Festival honors the Golden Age of Hollywood. Movie and TV stars present interviews, autograph and photo sessions along with nightly entertainment, contests and a closing banquet.
Smithfield - March 11-13 - The Smithfield Center is the site for the Home & Garden Show 2005.
Newport News - March 19 - Take the Civil War's Along This River: The Warwick-Yorktown Line Van Tour with historians. The tour departs from Lee Hall Mansion.
Portsmouth - March 19 - Celebrate the start of spring with kites, weather and bubbles at Day of Wind at the Children's Museum of Virginia.
Williamsburg - March 19-20 - Jamestown Settlement's 22nd annual Military Through the Ages features reenactors presenting a chronological display of military history, weapons and artifacts, including vehicles and other equipment.
Richmond - March 12 - As part of Women's History Month, take a guided bus tour with the Valentine Richmond History Center and learn about "Richmond's Steel Magnolias — Women who Mattered."
Wintergreen - March 12 - You know spring's around the bend when a major ski resort presents a Snoblast Beach Party to get you in the mood! You can still enjoy the slopes while listening to island music and enjoying games and competitions.
Chester - March 13 & 19 - Building Early Colonial Virginia: Presentation on Early Virginia Architecture features the original, styles and materials of buildings of the English colonists and the Powhatan Indians at Henricus Historical Park. The hands-on workshop is the 19th. Registration is required.
Charlottesville - March 16-20 - The 11th annual Virginia Festival of the Book brings together writers, readers and families to enjoy readings, panel discussions, and hands-on events with more than 200 writers, illustrators, publishing professionals. These five days of free literary events are open to the public, honoring book culture and promoting reading and literacy.
Montpelier Station - March 16 - Celebrate the 254th anniversary of the birth of James Madison at his Birthday Celebration. Admission is free at his home, Montpelier.
Petersburg - March 18 - Friday for the Arts features local and regional art complemented by receptions and live music throughout historic Olde Towne.
Richmond - March 18 - Celebrate the birthday of John Marshall's wife at the Polly Marshall's Birthday event. Tour the Marshall's home and have some birthday cake.
Bedford - March 24 - The National D-Day Memorial presents its Women's History Program on the critical role of women during World War II. Meet at the new Bedford Visitors' Center directly across from the memorial.
Salem - March 18-19 - Watch national teams from around the country compete at the N.C.A.A. Division III Men's Basketball Championship.Roanoke - March 19 - The annual St. Patrick's Day Parade & Festival starts with the region's largest parade followed by Irish dancing, food, drinks and plenty of good old Irish fun!
Blue Ridge Highlands
Galax - March 19 - The Fairview Ruritan's Old Fiddler's Convention starts the bluegrass and old-timey music season! WAtch musicians compete for prizes and enjoy great food. This is a popular family event!
Whitetop - March 19-20 - The Whitetop Mountain Maple Festival celebrates the arrival of spring with mountain tunes, crafts, wildflowers and local foods. Tour the sugar house for a "tapping" of the maples.
Chesapeake Bay
Mathews - March 19 - Make jewelry, play with clay, finger paint, decorate flower pots and more at the Bay School Cultural Arts Center's Family Art Day.
White Stone - March 19-20 - The unique Rappahannock River Waterfowl Show showcases all forms of wildfowl art — decoys, carvings, sculptures, originial paints, prints and jewelry.
Eastern Shore
Chincoteague - March 26 - See works from 75 artists and craftsmen at the Chincoteague Island Annual Spring Craft Show. Enjoy great food, too.
